Ketchikan, Fun with Friends

Creek Street - Ketchikan

Ketchikan
We rendezvoused with our friends Bruce and Pam at Prince Rupert, where they joined us aboard “Got d’ Fever” for a cruise to Ketchikan Alaska.  We left Prince Rupert shortly after 14:00 and transited Venn Passage, a narrow, twisting channel with shoals on each side before reaching open water.  Arrived at Brundige Inlet on Dundas Island and anchored for the night.  Next morning we motored for 7 hours to Ketchikan Alaska situated on the southwest side of Revillagigedo Island.  After clearing customs, Pam and I walked through town along the waterfront stopping at some of the shops; it’s definitely a town that caters to the tourists, especially the cruise ships.  A favorite stop was “Creek Street,” a collection of houses built on pilings along both sides of the creek.  In 1903 the city council ordered all “bawdy houses” to be moved to a single location.  The number of houses increased from 24 to 33 after WWII and the “sporting business” was finally closed in 1954.  The best known of the “red-light district” was Dolly Arthur, she lived at Creek Street No. 24 until 1975.  We also visited the Cape Fox Lodge on the hill top, reached by a Funicular tram.  The Lodge houses lovely Native artifacts and original totems are located on the grounds.
