Inspection from Diver



Prior to leaving Prince Rupert, we had a scuba-diver check the bottom of our boat for wear on the zincs.  Zincs are attached to the underside of a boat so that electrolysis will not eat away at metal parts on the boat; zincs need to be replaced as they wear down.  When connected to shore power at a dock, spurious electrical current flows through the water and will eat away at anything metal, so zincs are an important part of preventative maintenance.  We started our trip in early April with new zincs that we had installed while the boat was still out of the water.  Of course when the boat is in the water, a diver is needed unless you have your own diving equipment and some courage!  “Got d’ Fever” has 9 zincs:  2 on each propeller shaft, 1 on each rudder, 1 on the transom, and 2 on the bow thruster.  Our zincs were reported to be at half their life per the diver’s inspection at Prince Rupert.
