Engine Zinc



Departed Sea Otter cove in the afternoon and encountered 4-5 foot ocean swells; we noticed an abundant amount of logging activity from years past as we cruised along the coast.  We entered the protected waters of Quatsino Sound and motored up the inlet to the small sport fishing community of Winter Harbour.  Before going ashore the next day, Leonard decided to change the zincs in the engines.  In addition to zincs on the outside of the boat which protect the vessel from electrolysis, small zincs are also installed in the engines.  When Leonard went to change out the zinc on the port engine, he discovered that the used zinc had come unscrewed and had fallen inside the heat-exchanger manifold.  Lorena saved the day by reaching in with her little fingers, pushing the zinc from the manifold through the cooling water intake pipe, which we had disconnected.  When Leonard checked the starboard engine zinc, we found the same scenario; and once again, Lorena performed her delicate operation – lifting the zinc and making a 90 degree turn to pull it through the pipe.  By the time we had finished our maintenance routine, it was noon and we were ready for lunch.
