Tofino has the feel of an ocean-side town in California rather than a village on Vancouver Island’s west coast. Because of its proximity to Long Beach and the big waves coming ashore, surfing competes with fishing as the number one sport in Tofino. We saw numerous surf board sales and rental shops as we walked through town; even the pharmacy had body-boards and beach toys. Long Beach starts near Tofino at Cox Point and stretches south over 15 miles to Quisitas Point near Ucluelet. It is made up of several sandy beaches that run together known as Long Beach. Tofino has taken advantage of this beautiful area and has a vibrant tourist industry, including whale watching excursions, fishing charters, scenic flights, and trips to Hot Springs Cove. Of course shops are included in the tourist trade, yippee gift shops at last! I purchased some cozy house-slippers for my weary feet and Leonard purchased a new coffee-bean grinder. Yes, worst of all emergencies, our old bean grinder stopped working! – we can now make latte’s once again. Speaking of lattes, there are good coffee shops in Tofino, along with great cafes and restaurants. Tofino also has several art galleries and clothing boutiques; and unlike many other northern towns, I was able to wear something nice and not feel out of place! The tourist trade in Tofino was originally started by movie stars who would float plane in from the city of Vancouver to experience the wilderness accessible from Tofino.
